Berlin City Life

Shopping in Zehlendorf, a suburb of Berlin, has lots of little shops along the street.  There are big malls in Berlin but not where we lived.  The biggest store for us was Woolworths!  We loved all the little shops and Tom loved the Backeri the most!  He just couldn't past them by.

To use a grocery cart at the store, you must put an euro coin in the slot and when you return the cart, you get your eruo back.

BIKES, BUSES, TRAINS, and WALKING--we covered many, many miles in Berlin.  Even the
mailman rides a bike.

The only thing that can stop the buses--is a marathon or a protest.  This time was anti-abortion so we didn't mind the walk to church.

How about a group bikeride?

Tiergarten Park is beautiful.   It began as the preferred hunting ground for the electors of Brandenburg. It was Friedrich I, the first Prussian king, 1701-1713 who opened the park to the general public, providing easy access to the Tiergarten by building roads and thruways.  It is a square mile and includes the Zoo.

The most beautiful cemeteries in the world are in Berlin.  We spoke with a man taking care of his parents plot--a beautiful garden.  He said that every 20 years you have to pay for the spot again.

A lake with a walking/jogging path around it was just one mile from our apartment.  It is part of the Grunewald Forest.

A charming German Home on the same street as the Mission Office.
